The Growing Popularity of the Hand Lift

Houston Plastic Surgeon By Dr. Paul Vitenas, Jr.

Our hands are like a workhorse, helping to accomplish everything we do, from washing dishes to driving a car, as well as holding a drink or lovingly patting a significant other. No matter how much we depend on our hands, however, most of us overlook their aesthetic importance, especially when it comes to rejuvenating cosmetic procedures. Times are changing though, and many people are starting to notice that the hands can be notorious for giving away our true age. Luckily, through a set of simple procedures, youthful hands can literally be within anyone’s reach.

New York plastic surgeon, Dr. John Farella, was recently quoted by the New York Times as saying, “As you get older, your hands lose volume, fat and elasticity. The fatty layer of the hand disappears, so the skin is more translucent and shriveled, and you see underlying structures like bones, tendons and veins.” Even with a youthful face, the resulting thin hands can make someone look older than they are. By undergoing hand rejuvenation, years will be taken off of the overall appearance.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s Hand Rejuvenation Guide, the restorative procedure should be considered when:

  • Hands have prominent veins or tendons due to a loss in volume
  • Hands are thin and boney
  • Hands begin to have fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hands show dark, ‘age’ spots
  • Hands appear to have uneven skin tone or an undesirable splotchy color

There are several different methods that can be utilized for a hand lift. As there is no set technique, results can easily be tailored to the individual patient’s needs. The Fraxel Laser is helpful for eliminating dark spots and areas of hyperpigmentation. Thermage will tighten lax, aging skin, and improve wrinkles. Fat injections can be useful to permanently plump thinning hands. Some doctors will even include Sclerotherapy, as needed, to reduce the appearance of unsightly, purple-ish spider veins on the hands.

Aging hands will lose volume and shape as the natural fat stores become depleted. This, along with age spots, can end up as the ultimate culprits for older looking hands. Dermal fillers are excellent for temporarily restoring lost shape and form of the hands. They can be placed in less than half an hour, without any downtime, and the final results will last up to six months, sometimes even longer.
