Fat Grafting and Face-Lifting: A Perfect Match

According to a recent study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery®, the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a high number of physicians are utilizing this noninvasive technique to add shape during facial rejuvenation.
“(Fat grafting) has become a common technique utilized by most surgeons today performing facial rejuvenation,” according to the new research by Dr. Sammy Sinno, a plastic surgeon at New York University. The technique can restore facial volume that has been depleted by the aging process, and sculpt the face to provide a healthier, fuller look that lasts for years to come.
The ASPS survey included 309 member surgeons. 85% of these plastic surgeons report utilizing the fat graft procedure in one or more of their facelift procedures. More than 70% of surgeons add that over the past ten years, they consistently include fat grafting in their procedures. Among the participating physicians, the primary fat injection site was along the cheeks and below the eyes. Additionally, other common sites for fat grafting are the nasolabial folds, between the nose and mouth.
Fat grafting involves the removal of fatty tissue from donor areas, like the abdomen, using liposuction. The fat is then processed and ready to inject into the face the same day. This small technique is relatively simple, yet provides big results. The ASPS survey shows a rapid acceptance of fat grafting during the facelift procedure, which means more satisfying facial rejuvenation results for every patient.
